An Ode to Moving House

DEAR CHILDREN:
In case you read this, and in case you have zero contact with any other form of nonsense with which we contact you (IE facebook, the radio, face to face), you should know we've moved. We'll be updating from headquarters located at:
http://friendsdontletfriendsbehipsters.tumblr.com/

From now on, until a cooler, more hipper form of communication becomes prevalent.

Until then,
Stay tumbld?

The Avett Brothers at the House of Blues. Part II

So oddly, this is the second time I've seen the Avett Brothers at a House of Blues. I say oddly because they were in different states. No matter. I can reduce the review to four things (one of which will have to wait until I find me a camera cable).

1) The Low Anthem were very, very boring. Bluesy folky types, and had their one song not been that slow, listening to it ad nauseum for almost an hour wouldn't've been so bad. The exception? Resident clarinetist/singer/what-was-that-thing-she-played-that-looked-like-saucers/bassist Jocie Adams. I genuinely thought she was about 12, and quite frankly I'm still not convinced to the contrary. No matter. Chick's got pipes. If she had sung the entire set I would've been a happy little toad. However, she sang about 1.5 songs spread out over 45 minutes.

2) The Avett Brothers rocked it, somehow, harder than they did in Boston. I'd attribute it to the smaller venue, more rabid fans, and the sheer damn giddiness everybody possessed. Whatever the cause, they smiled more, literally everyone knew the words to literally every song (even the obscure early stuff) and the floor shook so damn hard from all the jumping on Paranoia in B-Flat Major that we all thought our deaths were imminent.
3) Scott Avett is one of those lucky few who looks even more attractive drenched in sweat than not.
4)Despite cameras being banned, despite getting a pat down before entering the HOB, and despite getting stuck behind the son of Robert Pershing Wadlow I snagged some bitchin' photos, which I'll post soon.

So, until I find my camera cable/we think of a more entertaining post,
Stay sweaty and proudly North Carolinian,

Side note: The weird damn things Jocie Adams played are called crotales (crote-all-ace). In case you were curious.

Hipster Puppies, too!

Kendra posted a Hipster Kitty, so I shall post a Hipster Puppy.
I sense judgement in his stare.

You know you'll miss us next week,
Here's a present to help pass the time, going along with the furr-y friend theme.

An Ode to the Human Body

Bodies are kind of awesome if you think about it. Not just in the without-them-you'd-be-incorporeal way, either, but also in ways significantly more badass. Like, you can lose 2/3 of your liver and a) survive, and b) it'll grow back. When you get a cold, the swollen throat, snot, fever and phlegm are all products YOUR OWN BODY has made in order to combat the virus. The average adult small intestine is 20 feet long.

While you're picturing snot and your liver and intestines, here's the playlist from this week:

  1. Adele - Cold Shoulder
  2. Florence + the Machine - Kiss With a Fist
  3. Passion Pit - Eyes as Candles
  4. Alice Russell - Fly in the Hand
  5. Regina Spektor - Blue Lips
  6. Tegan and Sara - Back in Your Head
  7. Noah and the Whale - Shape of My Heart
  8. Ray Lamontagne - Hold You in My Arms
  9. Cary Brothers - Blue Eyes
  10. The Avett Brothers - Kick Drum Heart
  11. Amy Millan - Blue in Yr Eye
  12. Laura Gibson - Hands in Pockets
  13. Hugh Grant - Pop Goes my Heart
  14. Jon Foreman - Behind Your Eyes
  15. Johnny Flynn - Tickle Me Pink
  16. Paul's Grandfather - Bones
  17. Margot and the Nuclear So and So's - Skeleton Key
  18. Kate Nash - Skeleton Song
  19. Muse - Map of Your Head
  20. Bowerbirds - Human Hands
  21. Ra Ra Riot - Run my Mouth
  22. Los Campesinos - You'll Need Those Fingers for Crossing
  23. The Matches - Salty Eyes
  24. Wonderful Spells - Bacon Bones
  25. Damone - On my Mind
  26. The Pixies - Crackity Jones
  27. The Ukranians - Batyar (Bigmouth Strikes Again)
  28. Islands - the Arm
  29. Carpark North - Human

Next week is spring break, but you can betcha bottom dollar that we'll be posting extraneous nubbins over the break.

Until then, marvel at the fact that the human femur is pound for pound stronger than concrete.

Whoa, dude.

An Ode to Silly Voices

We here at FDLFBH take ourselves very seriously. Like, deadly. Subsequently, sometimes we need to vent, lest our poor little heads explode and our brains burst forth like some kind of horrendous piƱata gone terribly wrong. Anyway, where was I?

An Ode to Obscure Holidays

So I meant to post this last week, when it was relevant, but I guess a week late is better than never. First, a preface:
I don't really get most holidays, particularly religious ones. And by 'get', I of course mean have any concept of what they represent, or why people celebrate them. Subsequently, last Wednesday when I saw flocks of people with little smudgies on their forehead, I thought lots of kids had been falling asleep in art class...near charcoal. Ash Wednesday = not something in my head.

Anywho, here's a song that, like my knowledge of the holiday, actually has nothing to do with it.
Until tomorrow,
Stay wise
FDLFBH

Elvis Perkins - Ash Wednesday

FUCK YEAH HIPSTER KITTY!

So we here at Fiddle Fib enjoy promoting things we enjoy when we have the opportunity. Last week, Ali brought you a nubbin on VV Brown, easily one of the most badass humans on the planet. This week, I bring you a website about kittens.

Maybe not a direct correlation, but I enjoy thinking about it.

Until Thursday (tomorrow?)
Stay Obscure,

We Are Family

It was all about familial love at FDLFBH last week; because we all like reliving those moments involving sisters/parents/uncles/second cousins-twice-removed-wait-they're-a-part-of-our-family (?) That and apparently we're Dolly Parton fans now. Not sure how the two are correlated? Listen in this week for an Ode to Funny Voices.

Taking the Throne

With Wino in rehab/out of rehab/giving away her 11 cats because they're 'out of control' (Google the last one, swear it's true), who can we turn to in order to fill that 60's soul meets R&B meets "wow is that voice coming out of that girl's mouth?" void?

We have finally found our answer. Check out V.V. Brown.

For all you Bostonians, she'll be at the Great Scott on February 22. For $9 we say this breath of fresh air will most definitely be worth it.

Happy President's Day!

An Ode to < 3

Ali loves love. Kendra hates love. Ali was the kid in elementary school who handmade all of her valentines. Kendra was the kid who ripped off all the candy, ate it, and hucked the cards afterward. Ali's half is more sweet than bitter. Kendra's half is more bitter than sweet. Next week:
An Ode to Fambly/Familia/Famiglia/Family/Being Trapped in a Car for Six Hours at a Time
quite fitting, given the addition of two baby interns to our family here at FDLFBH. By the by, in case you're wondering how to pronounce that, it's fiddle-fib. If you're trying to save time.
Anywho, until then, enjoy the tunes. Maybe we'll post some stuff. Maybe the interns will. Maybe barnacles will come flying out of my pants.

A Post Script

Sometimes we'll arbitrarily post songs from the previous week's show. This is one of those times.

Elvis Perkins in Dearland - Doomsday
Andrew Bird - 11:11

Their theme? Gangly, pasty white multi instrumentalists in their mid 30s we currently or have in the past crushed on.

(A&K)
So I guess it's sort of fitting that last week's theme was an Ode to Time and somehow it's Sunday and the playlist hasn't been posted yet. Like, we haven't had the time to do it. GEDDIT?!

Screw you. It's funny.

  1. Obra Squara - Perfect Timing (This Morning)
  2. Emily Jane White - Time is On Your Side
  3. John Mayer - Stop this Train
  4. Alexi Murdoch - All My Days

An addendum

I would like to note a correction to last week's show. The preposterously long title to of Montreal's little known hit 'Dustin Hoffman's Wife Makes A Sarcastic Remark, Cuts The Head Off A Duck, Places It Where The Tub Was And Begins To Growl' was written down incorrectly on the part of yours truly. Too many words for my wee little noodle to grasp, methinks.

Anywho, to make up for it, here's a really, really good song.
In the coming week, expect more errors, more music, and above all, more of this stuff:

Images we love, blatantly stolen from websites funnier than ours.

Until then,
Keep on rockin' in the free world,

Ode to Pretension

1/14/10

First show! And what a great way to start off the semester with our favorite hipster virtue: pretension. Here are songs we love, but are "holier than thou" in some way or another…whether it is the title, the group, or even the way the artist sounds while singing. Note: we also threw in some extremely unpretentious songs, too, just to feel a little bit better about ourselves.
